You may think that skydiving began after the invention of the aircraft. This is not so. People in China began designing parachutes as early as the 1100’s. Leonardo da Vinci also had plans for a parachute. So, who was the first person to jump? André-Jacques Garnerin, a French inventor, is credited with designing the first parachute and making the first skydiving jump. Without an airplane, he jumped from a hot air balloon.

It was after World War I that true skydiving began. It was used during aerial shows and definitely made an impact. It was these shows that gave the military the idea of using skydiving to place troops in enemy territory. Most notoriously, this was done on the Beach at Normandy.

Thanks to excessive nylon and parachute material after the war, people decided that it would simply be fun to jump out of airplanes. This is how it became a sport and hobby for thrill seekers. Since this time, the gear for skydivers has significantly improved.

Skydiving goggles have always been a necessity. Imagine jumping from the air without eye protection as the wind rushes in your face. Your eyes would dry up and burn. It would not be comfortable. So, skydiving goggles became a staple in the sport. Along with skydiving goggles, new parachutes and apparel were added to make the experience more enjoyable. The new gear allows the person to glide more smoothly through the air. Obviously, helmets are used in case there is a poor impact and skydiving goggles allow the wearer to open their eyes and look around at the amazing view!

Skydiving is still very popular with thrill seekers and has become something that many people want to try at some point in their lives. Whether or not they chicken out beforehand is completely their own prerogative. What is most important is that everyone has an expert to teach them or in some cases jump with them to the ground. It is important to make sure you are well taught and prepared both physically and mentally for this quick journey from the sky back to earth. And of course, having the proper apparel and safety equipment, including the necessary skydiving goggles will help you have the best possible skydiving experience.
